BAY CITY, Mich. — Wayne State University senior running back Josh Renel has been named recipient of the 2011 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Jack H. McAvoy Award as announced by Commissioner Dell Robinson. The award is presented annually to the GLIAC football player who best combines outstanding character and leadership on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.

A native of Rochester Hills, Michigan, Renel has earned a 3.63 grade point average (4.0 scale) while majoring in marketing. He has been named to the GLIAC All-Academic football team three times, is a First Team Academic All-American, is a two-time member of the GLIAC Football All-Conference First Team, and a 2011 All-Region performer. A fall 2010 and 2011 GLIAC Commissioner’s Award recipient for athletic and academic excellence, Renel is an active member of the community and volunteers in his spare time to Make a Wish Foundation and the United Way Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, among other charities.

This season, Renel helped the Warriors to the NCAA Division II championship game where he began the contest with a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown (only the second time in the Division II NCAA championship contest the opening kickoff was returned for a score). He finished the season ranked 28th nationally in all-purpose yards per game (146.00), 33rd in kickoff return average (25.61), and 55th in rushing yards per game (84.56). Renel led the GLIAC in all-purpose yards (2,336), was second in punt return average (12.8), third in rushing yards (1,353), and fourth in both rushing touchdowns (14) and kickoff return average (25.8).

“Josh personifies the true meaning of the term student-athlete,” stated Commissioner Robinson. “He provides an outstanding platform for the McAvoy Award highlighting the type of student-athlete we have our conference. He will be a future leader in his field of study as well as his community.”

Renel becomes the second Wayne State student-athlete to win the award joining Matt Fishburn who earned the award in 1997. Ferris State University has had the most recipients of the award (4), with Michigan Technological University, Saginaw Valley State University, Hillsdale College and Wayne State all have two apiece. The Award is named for former Hillsdale College director of athletics and head football coach, Jack McAvoy, who was instrumental in the founding of the Midwest Intercollegiate Football Conference (MIFC), now known as the GLIAC.

Wayne State University sophomore Josh Renel (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams Class of 2008) has been selected GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week following his 156 return yard performance in Saturday's win at Indianapolis.

Renel had five punt returns for 66 yards and one kickoff return for 90 yards, which was his first collegiate touchdown).

His first punt return of 25 yards put WSU in business at the UIndy 23 where Joique Bell rushed in on the very next play to pull the Warriors within one at 7-6. Renel's 90-yard kickoff return which ended up being the game winning points put the Warriors ahead 24-20 just 12 seconds after Indy had taken a 20-18 lead. It was the seventh longest kickoff return for a touchdown in school history.

Wayne State (2-1 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) returns home to face the Findlay Oilers this Saturday at noon.

Congratulations to Alex McClelland,  Captain of the '06 Highlanders,  on being selected  All-Conference,  All-Academic by the HCAC  (Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference).    Alex received a scholarship to attend Bluffton University in Ohio.    He was selected for this  All-Conference distinction after starting at Strong Safety on Defense and receiving a  3.8 GPA.      Congratulations Alex!

Webmaster's Note: Alex passed away on July 15th, 2009 after a 16 month battle with cancer.  He is remembered for his tenacity on the field, his capacity for love off the field, and for his faith in God.  Adams has dedicated the 2009 season to Alex and fellow fallen Highlander Dylan Cope and commemorate them with their "Choose to Live Strong" motto.  Alex also assisted on the web site with real time updates during the games last year, where he was on the sidelines cheering on his younger brother (2009 senior Austin McClelland).

Capt. Luke Lazzo, 27, commander of 1st Platoon, Company A, 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, salutes after receiving a Bronze Star with V device during a ceremony on Wednesday at Camp Schwab, Okinawa.
(reproduced from Stars and Stripes Pacific edition, Monday, December 1, 2008)

While searching houses in the al Jazeera desert Aug. 10, 1st Lazzo's Platoon came under attack. According to his citation,  Lazzo, the platoon commander, braved heavy small-arms fire so three of his four Marines could get out of the building, according to his citation. He then led two teams against the enemy so he could dig out the fourth Marine from the rubble.

Dominic Moran to Try-out for NY Jets For most seniors in college, May is frequently spent lining up interviews for the first real job.  For 6' 5" Adams alum Dominic Moran (Class of 2002), who graduated from Western Michigan University in April, at least one of his interviews will not require a suit, but instead will be conducted with the NFL New York Jets, in pads.

Moran received the call within minutes of the close of the NFL draft Sunday to come to New York as a free agent to try out for the team. According to Annette Moran, Dominic's mother, "It was a very, very long day!" She and Dominic's dad, Tom, will be sending him off on May 11th.

Update on Michael Knill

Michael walked on to the University of Michigan team this spring as a 5th
year senior. He tried out as a tight end (his position in High School) but
they asked him to play defensive line. His number is 63.

He is now playing defensive tackle (behind Alan Branch) and travels with the
team to most games. He saw some playing time in the Wisconsin game but has
yet to record any statistics. This was Michael's first game experience in 5
years.

With the team 8-0 and trying to reach the national title game, needless to
say, everyone is pretty excited.

Michael is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Kinesiology at U of M.

A few firsts for Michael:

- he is the first, final-year of eligibility walk on ever taken by Lloyd
Carr
- he set the team record for the 225 bench lift (48 times) which is 2 more
than the previous high ever recorded for the NFL combine
- Coach Carr has given Michael senior status on the team and will be
receiving his M-ring on Nov 27th

- Michael also walked on at Michigan State back in 2003 but decided to
pursue academics at U of M and did not play for the team. This makes
him one of the few players that have been on both the U of M and Michigan
State teams!
